FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are the classes beginner-friendly?
Absolutely! Our classes welcome practitioners of all levels and backgrounds, including beginners. We focus on building foundational skills and gradually increasing complexity, with content planned on a yearly basis to ensure everyone can learn and progress at their own pace.
I am advanced/a champion/black belt in another martial art/s. Which class should I join?

Due to the diverse content of Yoseikan Budo, everyone is a beginner in some aspect. We recommend coming to class with an open mind, as our approach focuses not on collecting techniques but on learning to move coherently and efficiently.

In principle, there is no "advanced class." Instead, we offer certain classes by invitation only. The first class you may be invited to join is the open mat session. As you progress in the Yoseikan Budo method, additional classes and dedicated workshops will become available to you, depending on your development and engagement within the system.

Why doesn’t Yoseikan Budo have colored belt ranks like in other martial arts?
Yoseikan Budo doesn’t use colored belts to indicate rank in order to prevent fostering ego and unnecessary competition. While technical grades exist, they aren’t displayed because skill level doesn’t necessarily reflect moral values, and vice versa. This approach emphasizes humility, unity, and personal growth over rank.
Will I lose weight / get in shape with this practice?
Yes, a regular practice of Yoseikan Budo (2-3 times per week) can contribute to weight loss, thanks to its dynamic, full-body exercises. Classes involve cardiovascular activity, strength training, and flexibility, all of which can support weight loss and fitness goals when combined with a balanced lifestyle. Moreover, training in Yoseikan Budo not only improves physical fitness but also fosters resilience, personal growth, and stress reduction. The holistic approach of Budo practice supports both body and mind, helping practitioners achieve balanced wellness.
How are the kids' classes?
Our kids' classes are designed to be fun, engaging, and safe. We emphasize fundamental movement skills, positive non-military discipline—which includes respect, empathy, and proactive guidance—and socio-emotional skills. Instead of practicing solo forms in front of a mirror or fostering excessive competitiveness at an early age, children work together to solve tasks and participate in group activities, building healthy friendships and a supportive social structure. Through playful practice, we aim to nurture confidence, coordination, and respect in an inclusive, bilingual, and international environment.

TESTIMONIALS

A Unique Path to Self-Improvement and Team Bonding

Elisa Kwon
Co-founder of Buddy City Shanghai

Martial arts is a powerful way to train both body and mind. Instead of going to the gym, Yoseikan is my choice for focus and self-improvement. The time I've spent learning kenjutsu and practicing at Yoseikan Budo Shanghai has been incredibly rewarding, and I always look forward to each session.

Learning with such a passionate and patient teacher like Julio and his team truly makes a difference. The team-building activity they organized for us was also fantastic, accommodating all skill levels and giving my staff the chance to unwind, learn, and enjoy a break from our usual work routine.

Discovering Versatility and Precision in My Practice

Aurélien Dalle

Business owner and entrepreneur

After learning striking in boxing and other arts, I joined Shanghai Yoseikan. There, I studied grappling arts, aiki, and sword techniques with Julio. His training opened up new perspectives and allowed me to develop in all aspects of martial arts: striking, take downs, ground work, self-defense, and weapons—comprehensive skills that weren’t integrated or available in other places I trained. I learned that fighting can be versatile, seamlessly transitioning from striking to joint locks or ground techniques, and that working with weapons like the sword enhances my sense of distance, which also benefits my striking.

Additionally, practicing katas has transformed how I move and perceive motion. My posture and movements have changed in subtle but profound ways that my body remembers instinctively, both on the mat and in daily life.

A Perfect Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Clement Fagon

CCE & Foreign Trade Advisor

As a 2nd Dan in Taekwondo with experience in BJJ, Muay Thai, and boxing, I can confidently say that training at the Yoseikan Budo China Dojo has been an unparalleled experience. Julio, our instructor, is an exceptionally skilled and passionate martial artist. His patience and expertise ensure that each class is both challenging and highly rewarding for all students.

I've always been a strong advocate for exploring and cross-training in various disciplines. I cherish the tradition and spirituality of martial arts, yet I also value the efficiency of modern combat sports and self-defense systems. Practicing Yoseikan Budo offers you this unique freedom of expression. It seamlessly integrates striking techniques, sophisticated projections, ground maneuvers, and the use of various weapons. It beautifully blends tradition with modernity. Depending on your focus and the instructors you encounter on your martial arts journey, you can enrich and develop your own unique approach to Yoseikan Budo.
